Great Drawings and Illustrations from Punch, 1841-1901: 192 Works by Leech, Keene, Du Maurier, May and 21 Others.
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (January, 1981)
Authors: Stanley Appellbaum, Richard Kelly, and Stanley Appelbaum
Average review score:

The artists of "Punch" tell the story of Victorian England
"Punch," also known as "The London Charivari" began as an imitation of the French satirical periodical "L'Assiette au Beurre" and became a British institution. This volume, edited by Stanley Appelbaum and Richard Kelly, reproduces 192 choice illustrations by over two-dozen staff and guest artists from the first half-century of the magazine's history. Obviously 1841-1901 is basically the reign of Queen Victoria, which means artists like "Alfred Crowquil", George du Maurier, Linley Sambourne, and Sir John Tenniel. Most of the drawings, which are arranged alphabetically by artist, were engraved on wood by "Punch" graver Joseph Swain. They were chosen primarily for their graphic quality, although Victorian society, politics, personalities, and fashion are portrayed as well. The drawings are dated along with an introduction and the volume begins with biographical entries about the artist. Several drawings have accompanying scraps of verse or satirical commentary. You will also find the familiar faces of Mr. Punch along with John Bull (and his American counterpart Brother Jonathan). When it comes to capturing the culture and politics of Victorian England, there is nothing superior to "Punch." True, the specific historical references will be lost on most of us, but reading between the lines you will still understand the gist of the barbs. There are more subtleties here than we find with contemporary American editorial cartoons, but that just underscores the significant differences in time and place. Whether you are a student of the Age of Victoria in English history or a fan of magazine illustrations, this collection of "Punch" drawings and illustrations.

History Of The Pack
If you are a young Packer fan or are the parent of a young Packer fan, I would sincerely recommend this book. As the author and a Packer fan myself, I think the mixture of great photography and easy to enjoy text will appeal to backers of the Pack in particular, and football fans in general.

Guide to College Selection: 2000 (Guide to College Selection)
Published in Paperback by Kaplan (August, 1999)
Authors: Steven Frank, R. Fred Zuker, Alice Murphey, N.Y.) Stanley H. Kaplan Educational Center (New York, and Kaplan Educational Centers
Average review score:

Excellent book for selection of colleges.
For the person who have no idea what colleges they go to, and what to look for in colleges. The book guides you through with a self-assessment survey in the beginning that allows you to prioritize between preferences you may have for colleges.

The most useful part of the book, however, is the catagorized colleges. Unlike other books that list colleges by state or alphabetic order, this book lists the "brain" colleges, the liberal arts colleges, the "specialized" colleges. This allows me to find colleges that are similar to the ones they are interested in.

Also gives significant insights into the colleges with long and informative commentaries on each of the profiled colleges.

Also includes a section on the admissions process itself.

The only shortcoming is the fact that not too many colleges are included, but the ones that are are amazingly done.

I spent an entire junior year trying to choose colleges. This book did the job in a few hours.

The Guide to the Federal Budget
Published in Hardcover by Rowman & Littlefield Publishing (January, 1997)
Author: Stanley E. Collender
Average review score:

The definitive guide to Federal budget issues.
When the media report that there are budget issues in Washington and that Congress and the President can't agree, Collender is the one to read to understand what is going on. He explains all the essential relevant economic, social, political, and legal factors that drive the Federal budget process and that result in the headlines that we see. Collender summarizes many complicated facts well, and uses clear language and illustrations to make his point. The annual versions are up to date and timely. This book comes out every year shortly after Collender presents his findings for the year in live briefings and seminars, where he uses state of the art presentation techniques. His entertaining and informative presentations transfer well to the paper medium. Unfortunately, you do have to buy it every year to keep up with developments in Washington. Things do change.

Half-A-Ball-Of-Kenki: An Ashanti Tale Retold
Published in School & Library Binding by Viking Press (March, 1979)
Authors: Verna Aardema and Diane Stanley
Average review score:

I love this book!
This book is so wonderful for children. It is a book that I remember being read as a young child, and to this day it remains a favorite. It is a great children's book, but it is more original than many other children's books that are out now. Unfortunately this book is out of print, but I would recommend looking for it. It is the an Ashanti tale retold, and both the story and the pictures can be enjoyed no matter what your age.

Handbook for Pain Management
Published in Paperback by W B Saunders (15 January, 1998)
Authors: Ruth T. Kingdon, Karen J. Stanley, Robert J. Kizior, and Barbara N. Cullen
Average review score:

Narcotics Are Not Just for Substance Abuse
This book should be at the top of every health professional's list. Many patients who suffer with intractable pain -- whether from AIDS or scoliosis -- will find it heartening and hope-inspiring. It clears up preconceptions and myths which are ubiquitous and extremely damaging to patients. It tackles head- on one of the oft-voiced Gut Fears in Prescribing, that of "turning the patient into an addict." Concisely yet comprehensively, it pioneers largely uncharted territory ranging from pain that is never adequately treated becaused it is classified as "nonmalignant" to that old bugaboo, "substance abuse." (A major point made under the latter heading is that people with substance abuse problems or drug dependency can still suffer pain!)

While providing a high-level discussion of the many different options available to clinicians treating pain, this volume is especially stellar in its treatment of narcotic therapy for chronic pain. Along the way, it answers questions that may never have been asked but should have been, such as "Why does my patient who says he's in pain look as if he isn't feeling anything?" (Answer: This is a hallmark of chronic pain, the chronic suppression of reactivity to pain.)

This volume is not a pharmacology treatise wafting about in the theoretical realms of academia. It is a report from the trenches. It tells real people how to deal with real pain, whether they are parents of toddlers or friends of seniors; whether they are health professionals, sufferers of pain, or both. Don't miss this one! -- It is a pragmagtically useful, exceptionally informative, all-round wonderful book.
